Renting in Southport
Southport is the Gold Coast’s commercial centre, set on the Broadwater rather than the open surf beach. The CBD, Griffith University’s Gold Coast campus, and Gold Coast University Hospital sit in or beside the suburb, with the G:link running through the middle.
The housing mix is wider than Surfers Paradise: older walk-up flats, houses on the western side, and newer towers near the water. That range is useful. It also means two “Southport” listings can be completely different places to live. Go to the street.
What to check
You are not on the surf beach
The Broadwater is the foreshore here. Surfers Paradise beach is a tram ride south. If the ad says “beachside”, check which water it means.
Older blocks need a slower inspection
Look at stairwells, mailbox security, window seals, and signs of leaks. Ask who you call when something breaks, and whether that person is the agent or an off-site manager.
Hospital and campus parking is not yours
Shift changes at the hospital and university fill nearby streets. If the lease does not include a bay, don’t plan around the kerb.
Ground floor and the park
Broadwater Parklands hosts public events. A ground-floor unit facing the park can be lovely on a Tuesday and loud on an event weekend. Visit when something is on if you can.
Day-to-day errands are the advantage
Supermarkets, services, and the Southport CBD are the practical reason to live here. Confirm the walk you would do with shopping bags, not the walk in the listing photo.
Getting around and daily life

G:link stations in and beside Southport include Gold Coast University Hospital, Griffith University, Queen Street, Nerang Street, Southport, Southport South, and Broadwater Parklands. The line runs from Helensvale in the north to Burleigh Heads in the south.
Southport does not have a Queensland Rail station. The Gold Coast heavy rail line is inland (Nerang, Robina, Varsity Lakes). For a train to Brisbane you change modes. Check the trip on Translink before you treat the tram as a Brisbane commute.
Health and study
Gold Coast University Hospital and Griffith University are on the tram. That is a genuine convenience if you work or study there, and a parking problem if you don’t.
The Broadwater
The parklands and foreshore are public. Swimming in the Broadwater is not the same as a patrolled surf beach. Use flagged beaches when you want the ocean.
Shops
The CBD covers ordinary errands that the tourist strip does not. Australia Fair is the central centre. Confirm opening hours if you finish work late.
