Renting in Coolangatta
Photo: Kgbo · CC BY-SA 4.0 on Wikimedia Commons (opens in a new tab)Coolangatta is the southern end of the Queensland coast, up against Tweed Heads in New South Wales. Rainbow Bay, Greenmount, and Snapper Rocks are the beaches. Gold Coast Airport is in the suburb.
People cross the border for shops, work, and medical care without thinking about it. Your lease does not. If the property is in Queensland, Queensland tenancy law applies, even when the agent’s other office, or the supermarket you prefer, is in Tweed.
What to check
Aircraft
Some streets hear the airport all day and others barely do. Visit while planes are moving, with the windows open. A Sunday evening visit can lie to you.
Which beach, which wind
Rainbow Bay and Greenmount are more sheltered than Snapper, which is a surf beach. “Ocean views” can also mean airport views. Look at both.
The border is a legal line
Public holidays, tenancy law, and some services change when you cross into NSW. Check the address on the agreement is the Queensland property you inspected.
No tram and no train
Don’t rent here on a promise of the airport railway. The corridor from Varsity Lakes to the airport is still in planning. It is not a service you can catch.
Salt on older fittings
Point Danger and the headlands are windy. Check windows, metal balcony rails, and how the building has been maintained.
Getting around and daily life
Transport notes checked in October 2026. Services change. Confirm the trip on Translink (opens in a new tab). The airport rail extension (opens in a new tab) is still planning, not a train you can catch.
There is no G:link station and no Queensland Rail station. The passenger line ends at Varsity Lakes. The Department of Transport and Main Roads is still planning a future extension toward the airport, with no service to ride.
In September 2026 Translink described route 777 as a limited-stop bus between Gold Coast Airport and Stockland Burleigh Heads, where you can change for the tram. Route 700 runs through to Tweed Heads. Both can change. Check Translink for your shift, including early flights if you work at the airport.
The point and the bays
Rainbow Bay, Greenmount, and Coolangatta beach are walkable from the centre. Snapper Rocks is the surf end. Swimming is for the patrolled flags.
The airport
Convenient if you fly for work. A noise and traffic source if you don’t. There is no middle position until you have stood on the street.
Tweed Heads
NSW shops and services are close. They don’t turn a Queensland tenancy into a New South Wales one.
For flood risk, use the City of Gold Coast (opens in a new tab) mapping for the street address. A suburb-wide “it flooded once” is not a substitute.
